Literature & film

The lesson aims to introduce students to the fantastic genre through a novel and the related film. The teacher introduces the book "The Lord of the Rings" to the students and initiates a free discussion about the book and the film. He then hands out sheets of paper with a large excerpt from the first chapter of the first volume of the trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring - An Unexpected Party. In order to gain time, the teacher can also organize an audition exercise (the audio-book is available free on the internet) Students read / listen to the excerpt and then they are presented with the corresponding movie scene.

Debate topics:
- what are the differences and similarities between the literary text and the film scene?
- what elements of the fantasy genre are presented in this fragment?
- why did Tolkien assimilate Sauron, the absolute evil, with an eye, whose pronunciation is the same as the personal pronoun I (in English: eye is pronounced the same as I)? Is there any resemblance between absolute evil and ego?
